Healthcare in North Cyprus
Everything you need to know about hospitals, health insurance, and the healthcare system
Healthcare System Overview
North Cyprus has both public and private healthcare services. Public hospitals provide basic healthcare at affordable prices, while private hospitals and clinics offer shorter waiting times and modern equipment.
Healthcare in the TRNC is more affordable compared to Turkey, and medical tourism is growing, particularly in dentistry, eye surgery, and cosmetic surgery.
Public Hospitals and Clinics
Every major city has at least one public hospital: Nicosia Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital (the largest and most comprehensive), Kyrenia Akçiçek Hospital, Famagusta State Hospital, and Güzelyurt Cengiz Topel Hospital.
Emergency services at public hospitals are free. Low fees are charged for outpatient consultations and tests. Health centers and family medicine units under the Ministry of Health also provide basic healthcare services.
Private Healthcare Facilities
The private healthcare sector in the TRNC is growing rapidly. Modern private hospitals and polyclinics operate primarily in Kyrenia and Nicosia. University hospitals such as Near East University Hospital, Girne University Hospital, and Dr. Suat Günsel Hospital have advanced medical technology.
Private consultation fees average 200-500 TL, with specialist consultations ranging from 400-1,000 TL. Tests such as blood work, X-rays, and MRIs are completed more quickly at private facilities.
Health Insurance
Employees in the TRNC benefit from public healthcare through Social Insurance. Private health insurance is strongly recommended for foreign nationals.
Local insurance companies offer comprehensive health insurance packages ranging from 3,000-10,000 TL annually. International health insurance is also valid in the TRNC, though coverage and partner facility lists should be checked in advance. Health insurance is mandatory for residence permit applications.
Pharmacies and Medication
Pharmacies are found in every city center and major residential area. Pharmacies are open weekdays 08:30-18:30 and half-day on Saturdays. A duty pharmacy system ensures access to medications during nights and weekends.
Many medications are available without prescription, and prices are quite affordable compared to Europe. Medications brought from Turkey are widely available. If you use specific medication, it's recommended to research availability in the TRNC in advance and bring sufficient supplies.
