Education in North Cyprus
A comprehensive guide to universities, primary and secondary schools, and the education system in the TRNC
Education System Overview
The education system in North Cyprus follows a structure parallel to Turkey's model. Compulsory education is 12 years, consisting of pre-school (ages 4-6), primary school (ages 6-10), middle school (ages 10-14), and high school (ages 14-18).
Public schools are free and follow the Turkish curriculum. Private schools offer both Turkish and English curriculum options. Schools following the British curriculum (IGCSE/A-Level) are particularly popular among expatriate families.
Universities and Higher Education
The TRNC is a significant higher education hub with over 20 universities. More than 100,000 students from around the world study here. The most well-known universities include Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Near East University (NEU), Girne American University (GAU), Cyprus International University (CIU), and METU Northern Cyprus Campus.
Universities offer programs in medicine, engineering, law, business, architecture, and tourism. Most programs are taught in Turkish or English. Annual tuition fees range from $3,000 to $15,000 depending on the program and university.
Private Schools
Various private school options are available for expatriate families. Schools following the British curriculum (such as The English School of Kyrenia, Necat British College) offer international education with preparation for Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level exams.
Private schools following the Turkish curriculum (such as Near East College) offer quality education with smaller class sizes and additional activities. Private school fees range from £2,000 to £8,000 per year.
Language Education
Knowing Turkish provides a significant advantage for living in the TRNC. Many universities and private institutions organize Turkish language courses for foreigners. Language centers at Eastern Mediterranean University and Near East University offer intensive Turkish programs.
English, Russian, and German language courses are also widely available. University preparatory programs offer one-year intensive language training before starting higher education.
Registration Processes and Key Information
Registration for public schools requires a residence permit and a copy of the student's passport. Private school applications are typically made directly to the school, and entrance exams may be required.
For university enrollment, a YÖK-equivalent diploma, language proficiency certificate (TOEFL/IELTS for English programs), and application form are needed. The academic calendar runs from September to June. Most universities offer scholarship opportunities, with special discounts for Turkish and TRNC citizens.
